I have been recommened a lot of conversion stories, of liberals or athiests seeing the light and turning. Most of them found their answers and were satisfied with them enough to embrace religion. Needless to say, I’ve also seen christians, muslims and hindus turning away. So today, I feel like telling you my story i.e. my transition from being a liberal to becoming a devout muslim, and back :) .
I might have answers for some people riddled with questions. It would be my pleasure to help someone out!

But then it seems, it’s better to let people find their own path. Be it a path of destruction or harmony, be it in religion or lack of it.

It suffices to say that a great Lord, would love all his creation equally, no matter what (cuz it’s (s)he who created us with the mental capacities we have; if they’re not enough for some of us to realize his/her greatness, it’s not our fault and it won’t bother him/her one bit! (s)he’s just too great to feel bad about it.)

(s)he started a process and prolly doesn’t care anymore where we go from here. There’s enough evidence out there to suggest his lack of liking, for any particular belief system. We inherit basic humanism and contiually reform it and that should be enough to live a good life.

I don’t want to be suggestive in any way. Find your own path. Come to me only when you intend to discuss, not to tell. If you’re not, keep it to yourself!

P.S. checking out the four previous posts on this blog, might help as well (except the friday one :D ).

A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side.

The other day I met some college friends. We chatted about the good old days and where everyone was. Then we talked about everybody’s love interests and affairs, old and new. As the chit chat continued we went from subject of friends and family to religion and then to men and women. Untill one of the guys said something like women are weaker than men.
Now, I’m not someone who goes around looking for argument but this just put me off. When I asked him how he thought women were weaker or inferior to men, he started with physical attributes and concluded with ‘god says so’. He than presented the age old circular logic, prophet said that god said so and the prophet was right cuz god said so in holy book and the holy book is right cuz prophet said it’s word of god and god’s word could never be wrong.
I ended it with a piece of advice for my friends. I asked ‘em to read some science stuff and try to judge the religious stuff using plain common sense. And they advised me not to indulge in such arguments as it would not just guarantee me a ticket to hell but also might be physically dangerous to me if some hardliners got to know of my stance.

On another note,
My table-tennis is getting better. I’m having trouble with smashing the ball and picking up quick returns, but I guess it’ll get sorted if I keep playing consistently.

On yet another note,
I have had a couple of days of nostalgia as I’ve been thinking a lot about someone I came to really like. I (will continue to) love her and wish her a great life with or without me.

On yet yet another note,
I downloaded and watched some amazing talks off ted{dot}com. I particularly loved Dr. Dawkins, Dennet and Hawking’s talks. But every speaker was amazing in her/his own right. If you have some time and a fair enough bandwidth, do check em out.

So, life’s great, work’s great as well, table tennis is fun, ignorance and religious fundamentalism is rampant and her thoughts are like fresh breeze yet melancholic.

Auf Wiedersehen,

Is religion a threat to rationality and science? April 23, 2008

“If religion isn’t the greatest threat to rationality and scientific progress, what is? Perhaps alcohol, or television, or addictive video games. But although each of these scourges – mixed blessings, in fact – has the power to overwhelm our best judgment and cloud our critical faculties, religion has a feature of that none of them can boast: it doesn’t just disable, it honours the disability. People are revered for their capacity to live in a dream world, to shield their minds from factual knowledge and make the major decisions of their lives by consulting voices in their heads that they call forth by rituals designed to intoxicate them.”
