Both make us gravitate towards another human (or authority). Both depend on two main factors:
1)Dependence and 2)Respect
Of the two factors, Dependence is the one that contributes majorly towards creating a feeling of Love or Loyalty. While respect plays a minor complimentary role.
We humans are probably the most selfish yet self-glorifying of all organisms. We give dignifying names to results of our basic instincts. It is probably the most important thing to us that we survive and as easily as possible at that. We store food and plan for future, we create partnerships and allegiances to ensure that our profits are maximised and we have an intangible insurance policy.
As long as someone can provide us with something we need, whether money, space or social standing, in return for something that they want us from us, we stay with them. We swear allegiance. In short, we remain loyal.
But its not just the material stuff that we depend on others for. We carry emotions and we share them. We react emotionally to stuff and people. And we sometimes depend emotionally on other people. People who simply allow us to express our emotions and care to listen to whatever we have to say. We like such people. We hang on to them. We even sacrifice, when needed, only to make sure we have a shoulder to cry on, and to have someone who can take care of us, emotionally. We call it love.
Loyality and Love, both stregthen as dependence increases and weaken as dependence is reduced. Both are considered honourable if the element of respect for the person/authority remains high. However lack of repect doesn’t result in complete lack of loyality (or love) but lack of dependence pretty much throws loyalty out of the window. And similarly, presence of respect doesn’t make us love or be loyal to someone, dependence does.
We are humans, mere selfish machines. Survival is our supreme desire and we do anything for it. Yet we consider ourselves high moral beings, yet our morality is as volatile as they come. Probably, for our own good.
